MEET SAIL RACING: LEVEL 2

In a cooperation with Porta Sailing school from Slovenia we are organising this amazing course, which will be run by Marjan Gorec and Ivan Nemet. During your stay, other members from Porta and FreeSpirit will take care for hospitality 🙂 We will also help you with apartment reservation and other logistics. 

To participate in this course, a minimum knowledge level is required, equivalent to the completion of a Level 1 course or similar experience.

Essential skills include tacking, jibing, sail trim in all directions, gennaker sailing, and an understanding of the basic racing rules of sailing.

Experience with sailing boats smaller than 20ft is very welcome, as it will contribute to the overall learning process in this advanced stage.

Minimum knowledge required:

Level 1 course completed or similar knowledge / experience. Tacking, jibing, sail trim in all directions, gennaker sailing.

Understanding basic racing rules of sailing. Experience from sailing boats smaller than 20ft very welcome.

17.30: Debrief with analysis and debate

DAY 2
09.30 Theory: Race sailing basics (Level 1 topics)
12.00. Lunch brake
13.00 On the water training: Becoming familiar with the boat, sail trim in different points of sail, tacking, jibing, gennaker
sailing. Searching for weak points. Boat speed comparison. Layline training.
17.30 Debrief.

DAY 3
09.30 Theory: Strategy and tactics. Upwind / downwind race from start to finish. Where to start, how to decide when to
tack and jibe.
11.00 On the water training (Lunch break 13.30. – 14.30): Roll tacks, roll jibes. Race start exercises. Short races.
17.30 Debrief.

DAY 4
09.30 Theory: Racing Rules of Sailing – complex situations (start, rounding marks…). How to sail a in different conditions
(from no wind to gale force winds).
10.30 On the water training (Lunch break 13.30. – 14.30): Improving upwind and downwind sailing (speed and angles to
the wind). Improving tacks and jibes. Improving weak points of each participant. Crew movement. Upwind / downwind and
coastal races.
17.30 Debrief.

DAY 5
09.30 Theory: Recapitulation, debate.
10.30 On the water training: Upwind / downwind and coastal races.
15.00 Debrief, farewell drink.
